Philippians 1:22-24

In these couple of verses, Paul continues writing about living and dying and the dilemma he faces as he weighs the options of both. Spend some time reading these verses and reflecting on the questions below. Remember that it is often helpful to read a couple of different translations to grasp a better understanding of what Paul means.

  • What is the dilemma that Paul describes in these verses?
  • Why is it a dilemma? Why is he torn?
  • What are the benefits of him staying? of departing?
  • What do you suppose Paul means by "fruitful labor?"
  • What do we learn about Paul in this section?

May God bless us with an understanding of His Word. Grace and peace.

Carmen says:

Paul's struggle begins because I think he's physically tired after 20 plus years of service for Christ and he is so joyful at the thought of being with Christ. He is ready to end life in the flesh, which here simply refers to living in the body. He senses that his work isn't done and that perhaps the Philippians can still benefit from his teaching. For this reason he feels his fruitful labor (continuing to lead them in their faith) is needed.
