Philippians 1:18-20

I'm providing you with a few more questions than normal because I think there is a lot to unpack in these verses. I'm including 1:18 in your reading because it's helpful in understanding verse 19. Since this may take a bit more time, especially given the last question, I would like us to spend the next few days diving into scripture to discover more about this section. This also affords me the opportunity to have a longer study time which I need given how things have been around here lately. So enjoy diving in. May the Holy Spirit reveal God's glorious truths to us.

  • Paul says "this will all turn out" in verse 19. What is "this" referring to?
  • "For" points us back to verse 18; therefore, verse 19 seems to explain why Paul can rejoice. Why?
  • From what is Paul confident he'll be delivered?
  • What more do we learn about Paul in these verses?
  • What is Paul eanestly expecting?
  • Why do you suppose Paul refers to living and dying?
  • How has Paul been bold for Christ in the past?

I'll try to answer in order of the questions.

1. I guess "this" means Paul's imprisonment. My niv says, "what has heppened to me will turn out for my deliverence."

2. He can rejoice because he believes God will work it all out according to his perfect plan.

3. not sure.

4. not sure.

5. He is expecting and hoping that he will not be ashamed, but have "sufficient courage" so as to exalt Christ whether he lives or dies.

6. Cause we're either doing one or the other! And Paul's death could occur soon.

7. By going out and preaching the gospel.

These answers are kind of short...I tried to be succinct. Looking forward to hearing you expound.

Carmen says:

Paul is aware that whatever happens to him, whether he continues to live or if he is to die soon that it will be God's plan. If he lives he is aware that his time for sharing the Good News isn't over yet. If he dies, his work for God on earth is done, and he will be with Christ which is what he longs for. He is sure of his salvation so he isn't fearful of death and eagerly anticipates the time that he can be with Christ. Much of Paul's work in the past was done with faith that he would be protected as long as his work wasn't finished. But he also used the brain God gave him and wasn't foolish ...there were times when he had to flee in order to remain alive. I'm sure he sensed at these times there was much more work to be done and he must stay alive. It could be at this point in his life that he feels his work is coming to an end and he is looking forward to living with Christ for eternity.
